Programs

The Justice Center is home to a diverse team of professionals that employs four main strategies to fight poverty and promote economic and social justice: litigation, research and policy analysis, legislative advocacy, and grassroots education and action. While Justice Center advocates maintain specialized knowledge and expertise in dozens on specific fields, we have five on-going substantive and strategy-based projects:

  • Budget & Tax Center
Through its special project, the North Carolina Budget and Tax Center, the Justice Center is North Carolina’s leading independent voice for progressive state fiscal policies that promote economic justice.
  • NC Health Access Coalition
Through its special project, the North Carolina Health Access Coalition, the Justice Center works to put “people first” in an increasingly profit-driven health care system.
  • Immigrants Legal Assistance Project
Through its special initiative, the Immigrants Legal Assistance Project (ILAP), the Justice Center provides direct legal assistance to low-income immigrants and migrant workers in order to help protect their civil rights and to assure that they have legal representation in immigration law matters. ILAP advocates also work in the community to build the capacity of other organizations providing legal assistance in immigration and naturalization matters and to promote progressive policy options on issues affecting immigrants. This project has two distinct areas of work:

  • Network of Immigrant Advocates
Through our Network of Immigrant Advocates, established in 1996, the North Carolina Justice Center provides training, technical assistance and community education on immigration law issues, immigrants’ and refugees' rights, workers’ rights, and immigrants’ access to public benefits and government services.
  • NC Education & Law Project
The North Carolina Education and Law Project, the Justice Center seeks to improve the public education system in North Carolina so that it better serves low-income and minority children.
