June 25 education advocacy day will lift up needs of North Carolina public schools

RALEIGH (June 24, 2024) – The North Carolina Justice Center and coalition partner Every Child NC will host an advocacy day for education rights on Tuesday, June 25. The event will begin with a breakfast training at Edenton Street United Methodist in downtown Raleigh from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Advocates will then go to the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA) from 10:00 a.m. to noon, where they will meet with key lawmakers about public education issues. Finally, the day will end with a lunch at Edenton Street United Methodist Church from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

Reporters are invited to attend any portion of the day and speak to participants about how the NCGA’s policies impact children and schools throughout North Carolina. The day will focus on advocating for the full funding of the Leandro Plan, an end to discriminatory school discipline practices, $180 million in funding to delay the childcare funding cliff, and a moratorium on private school vouchers that use public funds.

“Supporting public schools is about being a good neighbor to all people in our communities,” said Sarah Montgomery, Senior Policy Advocate at the NC Justice Center. “We know that a well-funded and equitable public school system leads to improved health and economic outcomes for students, which in turn strengthens the social fabric of our society. It’s time for lawmakers to show that they care about the future of our communities by investing in our public schools.”
