RALEIGH (January 13, 2025) – After two years of extraordinary service to the North Carolina Justice Center, Reggie Shuford will be moving on from his role as Executive Director, effective February 7, 2025. Having accepted an invitation to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Independence Foundation, Reggie will be continuing his mission-driven advocacy work, just from a different angle. While we will miss Reggie’s leadership, energy, and passion for our mission, we understand and support his decision to return to Pennsylvania as he embarks upon the next phase of his career.

“After working with such an exceptionally talented staff on such important matters, in such consequential times, I struggled with this decision,” says Reggie. “Though it was a difficult decision, it was the right one for me, and I feel I am leaving the North Carolina Justice Center in capable hands and well positioned for continued success. I look forward to seeing the incredible things the NC Justice Center will continue to achieve, and it will always have my support.”

A proud Wilmington native and alumnus of UNC and UNC School of Law, Reggie has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to eliminating poverty and advancing racial, economic, and social justice in North Carolina.

“During Reggie’s tenure, we have achieved key policy wins benefiting thousands of North Carolinians, including the expansion of Medicaid eligibility, successful defense of the Second Chance Act, and ensuring numerous consumer and tenant protections,” says Matt Case, Co-Chair of the NC Justice Center Board. “We also achieved significant litigation successes, including the settlement of two consumer class actions for a combined total of over $6.75 million.”

Reggie’s focus on equity, fundraising, and building a culture of collaboration, coupled with initiating strategic planning, has helped the NC Justice Center build a strong foundation for the future, including our first-ever endowment. We are grateful for his time with us, and we wish him the best in his next endeavor.
