Julia Hawes joined the Justice Center’s communications team in February 2011. She became Director of Communications in April 2016.
Prior to moving to North Carolina, Julia worked as a journalist and communications professional in Chicago, Boston, and The Hague, where she covered trials at the international criminal tribunals for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. As a print and multimedia reporter, Julia covered a variety of topics, including international and domestic human rights, travel, the arts, religion, and politics — reporting on Election Day 2008 in Chicago’s Grant Park was a particular highlight. Julia received her B.A. from Vassar College and holds a M.S. from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
