RALEIGH (November 22, 2024) – On Wednesday, the North Carolina General Assembly voted to override Governor Cooper’s veto of House Bill 10. We are disappointed that lawmakers chose to turn their backs on North Carolina’s immigrant communities and public schools with this veto override. Instead, lawmakers spent more on taxpayer-funded refunds for wealthy families to subsidize their private school tuition than on hurricane relief, and chose to further marginalize immigrant communities by fanning the flames of anti-immigrant rhetoric.

We will not back down from supporting our neighbors impacted by this harmful legislation.

The NC Justice Center will continue to work closely with our partners in the immigration and public education spaces as the potential impacts of HB 10 become clearer. We stand with the communities harmed by this measure—communities already facing discrimination and lack of access to resources.
